Tom Lantos Biography:

Tom Lantos is serving his thirteenth term in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was first elected to Congress in November 1980 - the only Democrat to defeat an un-indicted incumbent Republican in the year of the Reagan landslide. He won his seat by the lowest plurality of any Member of Congress elected that year - 46% to his opponent's 43%. Through excellent constituent service, careful attention to his district's needs, and hard work in the Bay Area and in Washington, Tom has been reelected repeatedly by large margins.

An American by choice, Tom Lantos was born in Budapest, Hungary, on February 1, 1928. He was 16 years of age when Nazi Germany occupied his native country. As a teenager, he was placed in a Hungarian fascist forced labor camp. He succeeded in escaping and was able to survive in a safe house in Budapest set up by Swedish humanitarian Raoul Wallenberg. His story is one of the individual accounts which forms the basis of Steven Spielberg's Academy Award winning documentary about the Holocaust in Hungary, The Last Days. An article about Tom's background in World War II and the Spielberg film was published in the University of Washington alumni magazine. The San Francisco Examiner also published an article focusing on Tom's background. The San Mateo Daily Journal published an article discussing how Tom's experiences in the Holocaust during World War II shaped his outlook and his course in life.

In 1947, Tom was awarded an academic scholarship to study in the United States on the basis of an essay he wrote about U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In August of that year, he arrived in New York City after a week-long boat trip to America on a converted World War II troop ship. His only possession was a precious Hungarian salami, which U.S. customs officials promptly confiscated when he arrived. Just a few weeks after he left Hungary, the communist party seized control of the country.

Tom attended the University of Washington in Seattle, where he received a B.A. and M.A. in Economics. He moved to San Francisco in 1950 and began graduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley, where he later received his Ph.D. in economics. In the fall of 1950 he started teaching economics at San Francisco State University.

In the summer of 1950, Tom Lantos married his childhood sweetheart, Annette Tillemann. Their first home was a tiny apartment in San Francisco. After a few years, they were able to purchase a modest home in San Bruno, and later they bought a home in Millbrae, where their two daughters attended public schools and where Tom served for several years as a member of the Millbrae School Board.

For three decades (1950-1980) Tom Lantos was a professor of economics, an international affairs analyst for public television, and an economic consultant to businesses. He also served in senior advisory roles to members of the United States Senate.

Tom and Annette Lantos are the parents of two daughters - Annette and Katrina. Annette is married to Timber Dick, an independent businessman in Colorado, and they are the parents of ten children. Katrina is married to Richard N. Swett, former New Hampshire Congressman (1991-1995) and former U.S. Ambassador to Denmark (1998-2001). The Swetts are the parents of seven children.

MSNBC correspondent and anchor David Shuster finds himself in not one but two controversies today.
First, while filling in for Tucker Carlson yesterday, Shuster made the comment "Doesn't it seem like Chelsea's sort of being pimped out in some weird sort of way?" referring to Chelsea Clinton's campaigning for her mother Hillary and making phone calls to superdelegates and The View. Well, Democratic officials (and MSNBC execs) aren't happy with the remark, and have threatened to pull out of the February 26 MSNBC debate. Shuster apologized this morning and also plans to go back on Carlson's show today to apologize again. (Update: Shuster has been suspended for his comment!)

But that's not the only controversy Shuster is in the middle of this week...
This morning he was filling in for Joe Scarborough on Morning Joe while Scarborough was on vacation, and during a call from Scarborough to talk about the election with Shuster, Pat Buchanan, and Mika Brzezinski, Scarborough got Morning Mad at Shuster for cutting him off after an answer. Now, they tried to laugh it off, but you could tell from Scarborough's tone and Shuster's reaction that it was really tense and not fake-tense. Scarborough reminded Shuster that the only reason why he's filling in for him is because he let him. Ouch.

Early life
Scialfa was born in affluent Deal, New Jersey. She was the middle child of Joseph Scialfa and Patricia (nee Morris) Scialfa. She also has half-siblings from her father’s second marriage. Unlike her future husband — and unknown to many Springsteen fans, who assumed her roots were working-class — she came from a comfortable background. Her father and mother were successful local entrepreneurs, who started with a single television store and became real estate developers.Scialfa was writing songs from an early age and first worked professionally as a back-up singer for New Jersey bar bands after she completed high school. In 1994, she stated in a Lear’s Magazine interview that she had little talent for anything but music and that she attended college as a way to further her ambitions as a performer while also satisfying parental expectations. She has a music degree from New York University, earned after she transferred from the University of Miami’s highly-respected jazz conservatory.

Music career
While in college, Scialfa was submitting original material to other artists in the hope that it would be recorded. However, none of her songs was recorded, and after graduating, Scialfa worked as a busker and waitress in Greenwich Village. Together with Soozie Tyrell and Lisa Lowell, she formed a street group known as Trickster. For many years, she struggled to make her way in the songwriting and recording industry in New York and New Jersey before playing at Kenny’s Castaway in Greenwich Village, as well as Asbury Park’s The Stone Pony. These gigs won her notice and, eventually, recording work with Southside Johnny and David Johansen.In 1984, Scialfa joined the E Street Band, three or four days before the opening show of the Born in the U.S.A. Tour, either because Springsteen wanted to expand the emotional range of the band (Marsh, Glory Days) or because Nils Lofgren contracted mononucleosis, which made it impossible for him to sing his backing vocals;. In 1986, she appeared on the Rolling Stones’ Dirty Work album, leaving her unique vocal mark on “One Hit (To the Body)” as well as other tracks. She worked with Keith Richards on his first solo disc Talk is Cheap. Steve Jordan, who co-produced the Richards’ record, was a friend of Scialfa’s from her Greenwich Village days.Scialfa has recorded three solo albums, 1993’s Rumble Doll, 2004’s 23rd Street Lullaby and 2007’s Play It As It Lays. Her first two albums received four-star reviews from Rolling Stone, 2007’s got three and a half. However, she has failed to produce a successful radio single. Private life and public image
According to some of Springsteen’s biographers, Scialfa and Springsteen were briefly involved during the 1984 Born in the USA tour, a relationship that ended shortly after Springsteen met future wife Julianne Phillips.During the 1988 Tunnel of Love Express tour, Scialfa took a central role in the sexually-charged stage performances, such as for “You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch)”, thereby displacing Springsteen’s traditional on-stage foil, saxophonist Clarence Clemons. Springsteen and Scialfa were later pictured together in tabloid photographs on a hotel balcony. Springsteen was married at the time to model Julianne Phillips.Springsteen’s divorce from Phillips was finalized in 1989. On June 8, 1991 Springsteen and Scialfa married. They have three children: Evan James (born 1990); Jessica Rae (1991); and Samuel Ryan (1994).When Springsteen decided to retire the E Street Band in 1989 and record and tour with a new session band, Scialfa suffered the fallout. In 2005, comedian Ahmed Ahmed joined 3 other comics from Los Angeles' Comedy Store on tour in Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show. They sped through 30 shows in 30 days through the heartland from Dallas to Atlanta to Louisville to Chicago. Ouch.

Fast forward to today - they filmed Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show and turned it into a sort of documentary cum concert movie, though not quite like Eddie Murphy Raw.

It's not all fun and laughter. Don't forget that comedy's roots lie in tragedy. The soft-spoken Ahmed Ahmed riffs on being Arabic after 9/11 and describes getting arrested at an airport just because he's there. The Egyptian-born comic does a hilarious routine on his problems with airport security and having the same name as a wanted terrorist, frankly admits that he capitalizes on his ethnicity. Exploitation of this material requires courage and the breaking of unspoken taboos. In between his stand-up routines, he said, "Fifteen minutes of validation is what we look forward to in our lives."

Vince Vaughn isn't a stand-up comic, but he comes across as a stand-up guy in his latest film.
"Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show" documents the "Wedding Crasher" as he takes four comedians on a cross-country tour of the heartland.
Vaughn is the driving force behind the film, so it's easy to say he made himself look pretty good in the final print. But given what I've read about him lately, he seems like someone you wouldn't mind cracking open a beer or two with.
My Washington Times review tells the rest ... of the story:
We always suspected that Wedding Crashing, Old School kicking Vince Vaughn had a big heart. “Vince Vaughn’s Wild West Comedy Show” confirms his ability to see beyond his Hollywood trappings. The Chicago native comes off as both avuncular and unaffected as he criss-crosses the country with a quartet of unknown comics. Did we mention “Wild West” is alternately hilarious and touching?
This isn’t “blue collar” comedy. Nor is it stuffed with East Coast neuroses. It’s just observational humor sprinkled with Midwestern sensibilities. While Borat mocked every cultural institution he could find during his infamous road trip, “Wild West” has nothing but love for the people they meet along the way.
The film, captured two years ago, takes four comics from L.A.‘s The Comedy Store and lets them barnstorm the country for 30 shows over 30 days. Mr. Vaughn emcees the act, often coaxing old pals like Jon Favreau up on stage. But the first 20 minutes feel too much like a vanity project. Even a brief musical interlude from Dwight Yoakam can‘t sustain our attention. The shoddy camera work and unimaginative staging make matters worse. And the early swatches of stand up are second rate, at best.
Then, gradually, the bits get funnier, the jokes draw deeper into the human experience and the curtain gets pulled back on the comics’ private lives. Turns out these aren’t seasoned pros, but upstarts desperate for their big break. One still waits tables between gigs.
It’s hard to pick a favorite from the foursome. Ahmed Ahmed [name cq] wrings laughs from his Egypt-American heritage, his soft-spoken stand-up free of bitterness. The more combustible Bret Ernst delivers the best physical comedy. His bit about visiting the local roller rink as a teen captures the anxiety of early adulthood. Reflections on unfriendly audiences feel familiar, though, as does news that their acts dovetail with their own quirks.
The comic caravan ran through parts of the country affected by Hurricane Katrina, but the sequences involving the disaster yields mixed results. The tour promoters all but forced the comics to lend a hand to those hardest hit. Their initial reticence is as surprising as it is selfish, and their subsequent change of heard isn’t as emotionally cathartic as we’d hope.
Better are the moments when the comedians visit their home towns, checking in with relatives rooting for their ascension up the show business ladder. “Wild West” might have transcended the concert film genre with more probing. Mr. Ahmed’s routines touch upon life as an Arab-American, but his performances amount to nothing more than cursory glances at racist behavior.
A gaggle of teenagers laugh when they realize the “gay guy” from “Wedding Crashers, Keir O’Donnell, is part of the comedy tour. But their chortling seems uncomfortable, a response that’s ripe for further examination. And we’d love to find out more about Peter Billingsley, who started in show business as “A Christmas Story’s” Ralphie and is now a film producer and Mr. Vaughn’s best bud.
“Vince Vaughn’s Wild West Comedy Show” won’t open anyone’s eyes about life as a stand-up, but Mr. Vaughn isn‘t interested in reinventing the concert film. He just wants to entertain flyover country - and us.
